The purpose of this website is to detail a few aspects of the joint venture project between Flight Data Services and the Institute of Industrial Research at the University of Portsmouth.
The Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) is the union of Academia and Industry in order to advance both parties knowledge, understanding and expertise within a field. KTP projects commonly involve the investment of time and money into the research, development and implementation of new technologies or working practices.
Working with both the Academic and Industrial partners is the KTP Associate (in this case, Chris). Chris is employed by the University of Portsmouth and is able to utilise required industrial resources which are supplied by Flight Data Services.
Chris's project is to develop an intelligent search engine which will extract more information than is currently possible out of Flight Data. Flight data is the information recorded in flight by sensors on an aircraft. The monitoring process of this information is called Flight Data Monitoring (FDM) or Flight Operations Quality Assurance (FOQA).
Chris's project and Masters degree, will involve the combination of complex data structures and Artificial Intelligence algorithms to develop a truly intelligent automated Flight Data search engine. The ultimate aim is to further improve upon Flight Safety. The project will incorporate a knowledge base of experts in the field of FDM / FOQA, along with an ability to self-teach in order to understand more about the data. The finished engine will highlight trends and exceptions in Flight data that are hidden deep within the data.
February 2009
The Knowledge Transfer Partnership between University of Portsmouth and Flight Data Services carried out during the last three years was successfully completed and was awarded the highest grade of “Outstanding” by the KTP Grading Panel.
