The 7th Flight Data Services User Group was held on the 25th April 2007. The 6 monthly users' group is an opportunity for all of FDSL's customers from around the world, to come together to share Flight Safety information within a confidential environment.
There were presentations from various FDSL customers along with guest speakers. Pete Riley and Paul Hodgson from NATS (www.nats.co.uk) provided a very informative presentation about level busts from an Air Traffic Controller perspective.
Steve Jarvis of Cranfield University (Steve Jarvis at cranfield.ac.uk) gave a very lively presentation on Human Factors in Aeronautics.
One session at the Users' Group is a confidential forum for exchange of experiences. These sessions are particularly valuable to Flight Safety Officers in small organisations, who often work in isolation. The confidential format allows discussion of highly sensitive topics.

Following the win of an EPSRC Grant to further the studies into the mathematical algorithms, the studentship has been awarded to Mr. Edward Smart.

Edward has a Masters in Mathematics and brings with him expert applied knowledge of Support Vector Machines (SVMs). He will be working closely with Chris, bringing expert mathematic techniques to the AI algorithm development.
September 2007
Chris presented his Flight Operations paper on Staying Safe in Times of Change to the AGS Users Conference held in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The conference, held between the 10th and 13th of September 2007, attendees included Flight Data Analysts and associated personnel from Airlines that use SAGEM's Analysis Ground Station for their Flight Data Analysis.
The conference was very interesting - especially seeing the different implimentations of the AGS system amongst other Airlines and discussing everyone's individual FDM troubles. It was facinating to see the range of implimentation levels in place; some use almost every feature AGS has to offer, whilst others are having troubles with the basics (mostly due to resource constraints) and can only use the data when reacting to events reported by members of crew.
Chris' presentation was very successful with lots of interest and even received offers of further funding and sponsorship!
July 2007
Chris presented his paper on Flight Data Monitoring in Times of Change to the ERA Joint Operations and Maintenance Workgroup. The meeting was held in Cologne, Germany on 10-12th July 2007.

The presentation sparked much interest and helped to promote and highlight the advantages of using Flight Data Monitoring to assist Airlines with Flight Operations Safety. Once again, the details of the research received a warm welcome, with many questions as to methodology being trialed and the percieved advantages the technology will bring to Flight Safety.
Some interesting points were brought up. Firstly, the interest was expressed about the possible applications of the AI algorithms to the Maintenance data, in order to highlight and predict changes in the operation of the aircraft itself rather than the Pilot's operation of the aircraft. In response; the advantage of the algorithms being developped is that they are being designed using a low level approach. They concentrate on the relationships between parameters and how they perform together over time. Therefore they do not care about

The current focus of the project is the development of Aritificial Intelligence Algorithms. By the use of many case studies, a multitude of different AI techniques are being studied to determine their effectiveness in analysing the complex format of Flight Data and obtaining useful results and finding "hidden" information within the data. Current techniques under study include Clustering, Fuzzy Logic, Neural Networks and Genetic Algorithms, with more case studies to follow!
March 2007
Chris' abstract for a Paper entitled "FOQA & FDM in Times of Change - Case Studies" , (see Latest Project News) was accepted and he was invited to write a Paper under the same title. The Paper was held as Standby for the 19th European Aviation Safety Seminar held in Amsterdam. Chris attended the conference with his two Supervisors, Eric Grummitt and David Brown on 12-14 March 2007.
The Seminar included some excellent presentations, from the results of an air crash investigation through to helicopter offshore approaches. Flight Data Services and the Institute of Industrial Research had a stand which sparked a lot of interest in the KTP project. It is always encouraging to hear people's views and opinions on how they see Flight Data Monitoring can be improved for the future, it shows the positive on-going drive that exists to improve upon existing FDM systems.
January 2007
Chris submitted a Paper with the above title to the Flight Safety Foundation for the forthcoming 19th European Aviation Safety Seminar held in Amsterdam, March 2007.
The Paper discusses how Flight Data Monitoring &/ Flight Operations Quality Assurance can be used by airlines to detect threats to operational safety. The following topics are discussed before examining some case studies.

The Paper is available for download in Adobe Acrobat PDF format by clicking this link (3mb).

C# (pronounced C-sharp) is the fastest growing programming language of today. C# is a new object oriented programming language from Microsoft and is derived from C and C++ with some borrowed concepts from Java. Using the .NET platform, it is designed for improving productivity in the development of Applications.
Techy bit: C# boasts type-safety, garbage collection, simplified type declarations, versioning and scaliability support, and many other features that make developing solutions faster and easier, especially for COM+ and Web services.

FDSL are the first company worldwide to fully impliment the new software release of SAGEM's Analysis Ground Station 2006. The upgrade was supervised by Jean-Philippe of the AGS Support team who flew over from Paris, France.
July 2006
Chris attended the Flight Data Monitoring (FDM) and Flight Operational Quality Assurance for Airlines course held at Cranfield University. The course is run with the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) for Flight Safety managers within Airlines in order to introduce them to FDM / FOQA and how they can impliment a successful FDM / FOQA program within their Airline with the aim of improving Flight Safety.
The course was very well run, personal thanks go out to David Wright (UK CAA) and Nick Dann (UK AAIB) who did an excellent job of running the course.
July 2006
Since early June 2006, Chris and FDSL have been in contact with representatives from PolyVista. A Proof of Concept was carried out to see how the tool could be used to analyse flight data.
The Proof of Concept (PoC) trial of the PolyVista OLAP discovery tool enabled us to use some predefined datamining algorithms and many advanced visualisation tools to view the flight data in a way FDSL have never been able to do before. Some interesting discoveries were made, but the conclusion was that PolyVista was not suited to FDSL's business needs. A lot was learnt from the PoC, including further defining FDSL's requirements for a tool.
June 2006
As part of the KTP project, Chris was required to undertake a quick win "Mini-Project" early on in the project. The mini-project, which focussed on the FDSL Data Management Transfer Units, was a huge success and has estimated revenues of £53,000 per annum for FDSL.
